How I Became a Colorist
Caitlin Ford's Story
"I am a 28-year old hairstylist, in the industry now for 8 years. I do hair full time from my studio, The Rainbow Room, at Chop Shop St. Louis. I also educate other professional stylists throughout the world through my online program Color by Caitlin Ford. When I was a teenager I started hacking at my own hair...coloring my own hair...and I had friends who eventually asked me to do their hair as well. I had always been really into drawing and painting so doing hair just felt like an extension of those things onto a new canvas."
A Day In The Life Of A Colorist
"Being a colorist is fun and rewarding because every day is different, and every client is different. Being constantly challenged in this way keeps my job fresh and interesting to me. I love when someone brings in a photo of something not hair related and asks me to translate it into wearable art for them. I also love creating big transformations for clients that involve completely changing their cut and color for a style that compliments them in a way they haven't experienced before."
Challenges & Influences
"It's not easy, and it's not a hobby. It's legitimate work that leaves my back, wrists and knees sore at the end of every day. Occasionally I'll have friends ask me for free work or discounts, which I always decline. I've even had clients ask me if I plan to go back to school to earn a degree in a more "legitimate" field, which is just about the most offensive thing you could ask me. I love my job, it's hard work that I enjoy doing and make a good living with...I wouldn't change it for anything."

We share a lot of ideas and learn so much from each other.
